The sound doesnt work on my psp!?

i am basically a newb tech when it comes to this type of electronic,
and i was wondering if i can get some assistance fixing it myself.

basically the sound doesn't work whatsoever. the external speakers work just fine, its the headphone jack. the psp assumes there's a headphone plugged into it and the external speakers don't kick in because of it, but when i plug in headphones it wont work at all. i was wondering if someone had a similar issue or some know how in order to get it working. oh ya the wifi works just fine so i know its not the board thats messed up, but the jack itself

what i was personally thinking was somehow knock out the headphone jack permanently so i can have the external speakers kick in, even if it means permanently damaging it so headphones can never be used again of course id rather it not come to this, but if its the only option...

any guesses?
oh ya forgot to mention its a PSP-1001 model

Turn the ringer/volume on button on. IT might be because you turned it off.
